Faustel's Vari-Coat™ Gravure Coater is a major advancement in gravure coating technology.

The benefits of using an engraved roll to meter the amount of coating applied are well known and time-tested. Principal among these is the ability of the engraved cylinder to deliver an accurate, uniform and repeatable coating film. The main disadvantage of a standard gravure coater is that a single cylinder can only deliver a single coat weight or film thickness. Changing the film thickness requires changing the engraved cylinder.

Faustel's Vari-Coat Gravure Coater overcomes this disadvantage by enabling a single engraved cylinder to deliver a controlled, additional amount of coating by employing a pressurized, enclosed doctor/applicator. Since the amount of internal applicator pressure can be accurately measured and controlled, the same is true of the amount of coating applied. The Vari-Coat Gravure Coater also applies the coating in reverse roll direction for the smoothest possible lay-down.

Additional benefits include improved air exclusion in the cylinder and in the applied coating, lower recirculation rates and higher operating speeds.

The final result is a simple coating system with improved coat weight control, a significantly smaller cylinder inventory for a range of coat weights, greatly reduced downtime attributable to cylinder changeovers, higher operating speeds and better coating quality.
